Mohegan Kindergarten Mission Statement

Recognizing the dynamic interaction of all areas of development, the Kindergarten program aims to promote the personal, social, physical, cognitive, and aesthetic development of each student. The curriculum is designed to be comprehensive, challenging, engaging, and culturally and linguistically responsive. This is specific to the individual and collective needs and abilities of our students. The teachers and support staff strive to form a partnership with families to maximize positive outcomes for all kindergarteners.

Kindergarten Program

The Kindergarten Language Arts curriculum focuses on the following:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Alphabetic Principle
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading fluency
  • Comprehension of fiction and informational text
  • Writing of opinion, narrative and explanatory pieces

The Kindergarten Math curriculum focuses on the following:

  • Numbers to 10
  • Two-dimensional & Three-dimensional shapes
  • Comparison with length, weight, capacity
  • Number pairs, addition & subtraction to 10
  • Numbers 10-20 and counting to 100
  • Analyzing, comparing, & composing shapes

Science, Social Studies, Health, and Character Education are integrated throughout the Kindergarten Day.

Assessments:

  • DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills) is used to assess the students’ progress in language arts three times a year. Progress Monitoring as needed.
  • Running Records
  • Math assessments are standard based

Enrichment Presentations vary but often include:

  • Fire department
  • Mystic Aquarium
  • Musical concert

End of Year

  • Presentation of Kindergarten certificate
