Welcome to Second Grade at Mohegan Elementary School!
Areas of Study
Language Arts
Montville Public Schools has adopted Readers Workshop Model as our reading program for students in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Each day, students in second grade enjoy about two hours of reading instruction. The instruction is divided into several components. There is a whole class lesson that focuses on word knowledge and fluency. Classes also do shared readings using student readers and student anthologies, during which teachers provide comprehension and vocabulary instruction. Students apply their learning with independent practice, usually decodable books, which then make their way home to be shared with family members. Also during the day, there is a block of time called "Workshop." This is a chance for teachers to differentiate instruction and meet with small groups to tailor their teaching to individual needs. The subject areas of science, social studies, and health are integrated into this program as well. The six themed units are Kindness, Let's Explore, Around the Town, Look Again, Courage, and America's People. The students demonstrated tremendous growth last year, and we look forward to another year filled with reading success!
DIBELS Assessment - (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Literacy Skills)
Tests are administered 3 times during the year (fall, winter, and spring).
Narrative Writing
